about

me.

Hi there,

The chances are you're here because, for one reason or another, you feel like your voice is holding you back.

Well, the good news is - I've been there too.

My performing career saw me touring the UK's leading theatres and performing internationally, including travelling the world as a vocalist on the Queen Mary 2, featuring at the Edinburgh Fringe festival and gigging as part of an acapella vocal trio.

Even so, the truth is... just like you (and the vast majority of my students), I've grappled with an array of vocal 'gremlins' over the years.

I know how scary it is to stand on a stage, ready to perform, but worried your voice is going to crack under the pressure. I’ve felt the disappointment of attempting a note or phrase fifty times without being any closer to the sound I want. I get how frustrating it is to have a compelling story to tell, vision to share, or song to sing, without the voice to do it justice.

The game-changer for me came when I discovered the wonderful world of voice science, and particularly the work of Jo Estill. I discovered that there are real, practical solutions out there for so many of these vocal issues. There are strategies and exercises, based on the anatomy and physiology of the voice, that truly get results. It was revolutionary for me, and my progress as a vocalist sky-rocketed.

So, why are my vocal struggles good news for you? Well, it turns out my greatest source of frustration and fear as a performer is actually my SUPERPOWER as a voice coach. It means...

1) I know, without a doubt, you can improve your voice too...

If I can do it, so can you.

With specific, targeted practice, that tricky note or phrase you've been longing to nail will start to feel a little easier. You might suddenly find you can get to the end of the day without your throat feeling hoarse. And as your voice becomes more reliable, consistent and responsive, you'll be able to relax when you're speaking or singing in public and concentrate on the message you want to communicate.

You might even enjoy yourself!

2) I've done the hard graft, so you don't have to.

I've spent literally thousands of hours of study, practice, observation, expert coaching (and being a general nerd) to make huge strides in my own vocal ability. I've spent at least the same amount of time learning how to help my students gain control of their own voices, cultivate powerful performance skills and build genuine confidence in themselves.

The voice is a complicated instrument and it can be overwhelming to figure it out by yourself. So, it's my job to make things simple. I take everything I've learnt over the years and hand-pick the essential information you need right now, delivered in practical bite-size pieces, so you achieve the changes you're dreaming of, quickly and effectively.

3) I genuinely care about you reaching your goals.

I've been where you are - I know you don't have the time or money to waste on coaching that's not right for you. That's why I offer each student a complimentary fifteen-minute consultation so we can both check we're a good fit. If we decide to work together I'll do whatever I can to support you as you work towards your goals.

My students are an amazingly diverse bunch - from complete beginners to seasoned pros, singer-songwriters to business executives, and seven-year-olds to seventy(plus)-year-olds. There's isn't much I haven't seen during these thirteen years as a voice coach, but if I haven't encountered your specific issue before, I'll research it and devise the best plan to address it. And if I'm not 100% sure I can help, I'll be totally honest and will try to find someone within my network of professionals who can.

it's my mission

to help you liberate yourself from your 'vocal gremlins' - to build a capable, powerful and engaging voice you can truly rely on, so you feel confident and excited to share it with the world.

did i mention I'm a bit of a nerd?

Ok, I'm a LOT of a nerd. I have a first-class BA (Hons) degree in Music & Drama from The University of Manchester and Master of Performance in Musical Theatre from The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. I'm eternally curious about the inner-workings of the voice and am in the final stages of training to become an Estill Master Trainer of Estill Voice. Mentored by Anne-Marie Speed of The Voice Explained, I'll be one of only a few qualified practitioners based in the North West.

I’m a Musical Theatre and Contemporary Commercial Music specialist.

Which is a fancy way of saying, "I’m really into Musicals and Rock & Pop". Although I help singers with other genres, this is me at my very best.

I work with students from all around the world, and just around the corner.

With online lessons, location need never be a barrier to us working together. If you're local to me we can also meet in-person at my place in Stockport, Greater Manchester (although in-person lessons are currently paused due to Covid-19). Additionally I work with students in educational establishments throughout the North West, currently as an Associate Voice Tutor for the Musical Theatre course at Edge Hill University and with Performing Arts & Music students at The Manchester College.
